The Power of the Circle - Foundation of My Canvas Mandalas

In my canvas work, the circle is the heartbeat of every mandala. Painted with layered textures, subtle gradients, and occasional metallic accents, the circle serves as the boundary and container for the energy within.

At the heart of every mandala lies the circle.

The word mandala means “circle,” and this shape is far from accidental. Across cultures and traditions, including Buddhism and Hinduism, the circle symbolizes unity, eternity, and wholeness.

Unlike a line, the circle has no beginning and no end. It represents:

  • Completion

  • Cycles of life

  • Interconnection

  • Infinite continuity

In mandala art, the outer circle acts as both boundary and protection. It holds the design together, creating a contained sacred space where complexity can unfold safely.

Psychologically, the circle reflects the self. The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung described circular imagery as a symbol of integration, especially during times of transformation.

When you look at a mandala, your eye naturally travels from the edge inward and back out again. This gentle visual rhythm creates a sense of calm and balance.

In my own work, the circle is more than structure, it is intention. It is the reminder that no matter how intricate life becomes, everything returns to center.
